Orthodontic techniques have improved over recent years to take account of the increasing demand for aesthetic results with minimum cosmetic intrusion during treatment. This means that orthodontic treatment for adults is a much more acceptable proposition than it has been in the past. Age is no barrier to orthodontic care with the new cosmetic appliances which are available.
For less complex movements the Invisalign appliance is the definitive invisible appliance. This technique involves using a series of custom made clear aligners which move the teeth to a prescribed position. These appliances are virtually invisible.
In contrast, children often prefer bright colours attached to their fixed appliances. It's cool to wear co-ordinated colours or those of a favourite football team.
It is advisable that children are seen by an orthodontist from the age of about 10 yrs old, as occasionally early diagnosis can prevent complex treatment later on. Generally, treatment will start as the adult dentition erupts, which is usually at about twelve years of age. In some cases, it is essential to treat problems during the pubertal growth spurt.
