Periodontology is the study of diseases affecting the structures that support the teeth. These consist of the gingivae (gums), the outer surface of the root of the tooth called cementum, the ligament and the bone.
There are two main gum conditions:-
Gingivitis Affects most people to a greater or lesser extent. If plaque, the white coating which forms on the teeth between brushings, is allowed to accumulate, the gums will become red and sometimes swollen and tender. This can be treated by working with a dedicated hygienist.
Periodontitis Occurs when there is loss of the deeper supporting structures, especially bone, when plaque has settled for a period of time. Periodontitis does not affect all people equally. Early diagnosis and treatment of young, susceptible people is very important. Otherwise, teeth may loosen early in life, and may be lost as early as the thirties and forties.
Our specialist periodontist is very successful in stabilising the condition and preventing further bone loss. Periodontal therapy does require good co-operation between patient and therapist and the condition requires long term management.
